Root Canal Therapy

Maple Glen, PA Dentist

Root canal therapy treats the center, or pulp, of a tooth that is inflamed, infected, or dead. The pulp is a soft substance within the hard outermost enamel and inner dentin tooth layers consisting of nerves, blood vessels, and connective tissue.

Symptoms of infection may include visible injury or swelling, sensitivity to temperature, or pain in the tooth and gums. If you experience any of these symptoms, contact Beyond Dentistry for a consultation. Of course, sometimes the nerve inside a tooth can become sick or “die” without a person ever experiencing any pain or noticeable swelling and resulting infections are sometimes found incidentally in the course of routine examination, usually with radiographs.

Root canal therapy involves removing the pulp from the tooth chamber and canals. We then clean the canals with a disinfecting solution, and eventually we fill the space with a bioactive sealer and filling material to prevent any bacteria from re-entering the canal spaces. Occasionally, we will place medicine inside the root canals and complete the procedure in more than one visit to allow the tooth to heal before the final root canal filling is placed. During your root canal therapy, we may provide local anesthesia or sedation to ensure your complete comfort.

After treatment, we may place a temporary filling to protect your tooth until your restoration is complete. Your tooth may feel sensitive for the first few days. This discomfort may be relieved with over-the-counter or prescribed pain medications, as directed. Avoid chewing on the treated tooth until you have your full restoration- for almost all posterior (back) teeth, this is a full-coverage crown. Some front teeth are considered to be “fully restored” with a filling and crowns are not always indicated for root canal treated front teeth. If a problem occurs, contact Beyond Dentistry.
